- The ancient Polynesian sport of surfing has been around for about a thousand years but only made its way to the US in the late 19th century. Santa Cruz is the documented birthplace of surfing as a sport in North America, is synonymous with US surf culture, and people travel there from all over to surf with local legends.
- California’s oldest State Park is in Santa Cruz County – Big Basin Redwoods State Park. The magnificent Redwood trees have been around for millennia and can top over 300 feet.
- UC Santa Cruz has a very unusual mascot – the banana slug!
